My First* Comic
No one understands me. Why am I the only person I know who loves comics this much? And let me just clarify ‘Comics’. A comic is the noun of ‘comedy’. ‘Comedy’ means ‘funny’. Comics are NOT:
- graphic novels
- manga
- superhero adventures
- all of that other weighty, wordy, arty stuff that doesn’t make you laugh.
I think a good comic is like poetry: quick, concise, intelligent and well-executed. Not all the time. But if it goes for more than a page: too long.
But, like I said, no one else cares. I bought the Complete Calvin & Hobbes the other day and no one I tell about it even blinks. I religiously check all my favourite web comics (you too can check them out in the links section! … but I know you won’t … ingrates) and have to restrain myself from emailing every fresh one to everyone to whom it would be relevant.
Anyway – I can’t go on about it this for decades (literally) without putting my money where my mouth is (my pen where my blog is) and posting some of my own comics. Not as big an event as you might think, I just read every toothpaste for dinner comic and now I (like thousands of others I’m told) can’t think in anything other than poorly drawn non-sequiturs. I drew these in a PhD meeting yesterday and so the major achievement is that I didn't draw any of my classmates.
So here they are.
He probably thinks you've got one foot too.

It never is.
Some people in the class were talking about the increasingly documented links between depression and creative writing.

Just because, fool!
That is almost the best comment I've ever received. And I got it twice!

Sorry Jono - I'm not slagging graphic novels (read 'Maus' over Xmas and loved it), it's just that funny comic strips are where it's at.
Next time I'm supposed to be procrastinating, I'll post one up for you.
But check out Toothpaste for Dinner before you request too many more squiggles...

I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes, especially the ones where Hobbes is a little Kitty.

I could just let it slide, but my obsessive side must call you on that one. I just read the CC&HC and Hobbes is never a little Kitty. Calvin does transmogrify into a tiger temporarily, but that's it.
